The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season [DVD Review]

If you’re thinking of buying The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray, then you’re probably already familiar with the series. You know about the epic love story between Elena and Stefan.  You know about Damon’s efforts to claim Elena for his own. You know about Bonnie the witch, Klaus and the Originals, Alaric and his magic ring and all manner of werewolves, hybrids and ghosts.

So instead of talking about the incredible plot twists of this past season, let’s talk about this brand new Blu-ray release.

Let’s start at the top, with the cover art that also adorns the menu screen. The painting features our trio enjoying a bloody, menage a’picnic. It’s fun but there’s something about Damon and Elena’s faces that isn’t quite right. Picky, I know, but as a fan, it’s important to me that they get these things right.

What they did get right, was choosing to release this video on Blu-ray because it looks sensational. The series may be dark in spirit, but on screen it’s warm and rich and crystal clear.  Every episode looks like a mini movie, especially when they take you back in time with one of their infamous historical flashbacks.

Fannish Features

The special features on this DVD include a close-up look at what it takes to make it all happen. You’ll spent a little time in the writers’ room watching how they break stories, then you’ll see how Line Producer Pascal Verschooris juggles the needs of the production with the realities of the budget.

My favorite featurette is the one devoted to the music and sound of The Vampire Diaries. Music plays a huge part of this series; from the sweeping romantic themes, to the hair-raising sounds of metal on metal, the haunting whispers of the witch house to the harmonic swells of impending doom.  And then there’s the crunchy celery – aka the sound of a vampire ripping into a victim’s neck, a sound that is unique to this series.

You’ll really learn to appreciate the music and sound effects when you watch them slowly layer in each one over a simple scene. Add some nighttime crickets, the crackle of fire, the whoosh of magic and a kick-ass musical theme and it makes all the difference. Of course, since they do their job right, you the viewer, won’t notice the individual sounds, you’ll just know that you’ve been swept away. (Do you know the sound secret behind the show’s most romantic moments?)

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season also features a gag reel which was cute but nothing special, a look at Stefan’s descent in to darkness and the origin story behind the show’s Original vampires.

You’ll also hear about the actor’s favorite scenes including Ian and Nina discussing pillow talk and Joseph Morgan talking about the significance of “a different kind of monster.” That’s a Blu-ray exclusive.

Oddly there’s not a single commentary on any episode. To make up for that Warner Brothers has included DVD discs and a free digital copy along with the Blu-ray discs. Now you don’t have to chose between one form or another

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger… You want The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray and you can get it right now.

The Vampire Diaries returns with new episodes on The CW on October 11.
