Supernatural Season 8 Takes the Bro Out of the Bromance

Though it was less than six months in real time, Supernatural flashed forward yet another year for the Season 8 opener “We Need to Talk About Kevin.” It’s still all about Sam and Dean Winchester, saving people, hunting things. . . you know, the family business but under the surface things are different and hopefully, it’s a good different.

The new season begins with a new show runner, Jeremy Carver who left the series back in 2010 to run Being Human for Syfy. Both shows are paranormal dramas, but Being Human is more about the characters and their emotional turmoil and it looks like we’re in for more of that now on Supernatural.

While Dean (Jensen Ackles) was fighting for his life in Purgatory, Sam (Jared Padalecki) was working on living a normal life. He got himself a girl, a dog, a house and presumably a job that didn’t involve spells, salt guns or magic knives. Not that we can blame him for wanting all those things but history has shown that hunters and home-lives don’t mix. Remember Lisa and Ben? We remember them, so why didn’t we hear their names brought up last night?

When Sam was defending his choice to walk away from the hunting life after Dean’s “death,” why didn’t he point out that Dean did the same thing when Sam went to hell a few years ago.

When Dean countered with the fact that hunters don’t get to walk away, why didn’t he use Lisa and Ben as an example of what’s bound to go wrong. At least he brought up Jessica and Mom, so some continuity but not enough.

So while Sam was bonding with his girl and his dog, Dean found himself a new pal named Benny (Ty Olsson). Benny is a vampire so it was mighty odd to see Dean embrace the fellow like he was long-lost kin. And what was up with that secret conversation they had near the end of the episode.

What happens in Purgatory stays in Purgatory. I’m guessing that Dean got a little too into all the violence (we saw this behavior when he came back from Hell) and now he wants to bury that part of himself. But think about what happens when soldiers return home from the war. Once you learn to live on adrenaline it’s hard to come back to picnics and laundry.

At this point, Sam and Dean are back, working as a team to protect Kevin while they hunt for another tablet from God. But clearly, they’d both rather be with other people and that’s bound to become a problem very soon.

It’s a new season of Supernatural. What do you think about Sam’s normal life and Dean’s buddy Benny?

Bonus behind the scenes shot – because when do we ever see Dean driving without his jacket?
