They say opposites attract and that certainly is the case with Clark Kent and Lois Lane. But if you started out with Episode 1, Season 1, it sure looked like Clark was going to end up with his first love Lana Lang. Even when Lois arrived on the scene, she was more of a foil than a love interest, but a lot has changed since then.
We got our first look at Lois Lane in “Crusade” (Season 4, Episode 1) when she discovered a naked Clark in the cornfield. Now, that’s something you don’t see everyday, but Lois tackles the situation with her usual fumbling, good intentions. She wraps him in a red blanket, (a portent of the cape to come?) and takes him to the hospital where she plans to dump and run. Lois is on a mission to find out what happened to her cousin Chloe and she doesn’t like being detoured. Ironically, since Clark has amnesia, Lois doesn’t realize that she’s standing in front of the one person who can truly help her on her quest.
Eventually, Clark becomes Clark and again and Lois takes up residence, not only in Smallville but at the Kent farm. Living in such close quarters makes things awkward between the two of them as they go from squabbling brother and sister, to respecting each other’s unique abilities. But as much as Lois begins to have feelings for her hunky farm boy, Clark isn’t ready to give away his heart. With Lana in and out of the picture (thanks in part to the arrival of boyfriend Jason, aka Jensen Ackles), and his superhero duties, Clark fears that he’ll never settle down with a woman he loves, but Superman fans know the truth.
Now, all these years later, a lot has changed. Lois and Clark are both reporters at the Daily Planet. They’ve left Smallville behind for the grind of the big city and Lois has fallen in love all over again. But what happens if Clark gives himself over completely? Will he be putting Lois’ life at risk? Can a man, even one from another planet, be both a superhero and a happily married husband? I guess we’ll find out when Smallville wraps up it’s run, this Friday with a special two-hour finale.
