New TV on DVD: Mystery Science Theater and SuperJail

mystery science theater dvdHow much do you love Mystery Science Theater? Often imitated, never duplicated, this show is the best way to revisit those wonderful old B-movies of the 50’s and 60’s.

Today, there’s a new release from Shout Factory. It’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVII and it includes a couple of my favorite movies.

The Deadly Mantis: Craig Stevens and William Hopper (no kidding) star in this exciting B (for giant bug) movie about an overgrown preying mantis on a quest for food. It’s doubly special because it was helmed by long-time Irwin Allen director Nathan Juran.

And speaking of Irwin Allen. . . this volume also includes. .

Village of the Giants: Okay, so this isn’t an Allen film. Still, Land of the Giants fans will get a kick out of this 1965 rock n roll horror flick from Bert I. Gordon.

Also on this set: Rocket Attack U.S.A and The Slime People.

Special features:

• Interview with The Slime People Star Judith (Morton) Fraser

• Chasing Rosebud: The Cinematic Life Of William Alland

• Life After MST3K: Trace Beaulieu

• Introduction By Mary Jo Pehl

• Original Trailers

• 4 Exclusive Mini-Posters By Artist Steve Vance

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVII is available now through Amazon for $39.69.

Also bowing today: SuperJail: Season Three

This summer The Warden is back and the death toll at Superjail continues to rise at a ridiculous rate in the all-new Adult Swim DVD release Superjail! Season 3! The DVD includes all 10 episodes from the animated comedy’s third season complete with fist fights baffling love triangles and psychedelic animation that will melt your face off. Series creators and executive producers Christy Karacas (Cartoon Sushi Robotomy) and Stephen Warbrick (Beavis and Butthead Daria) have also created a collection of bonus features for the DVD which include animatics rough cuts and an Introstring featurette.

If you like Mystery Science Theater’s offbeat sense of humor than you might enjoy this Adult Swim gem. Just remember, this cartoon is not for the kiddies.

Superjail: Season Three is available now on Amazon for $14.99
