Back in 1998, I was working as a freelance reporter for Inside
Kung-Fu magazine. Weird, I know. At the time, I knew absolutely NOTHING
about martial arts but I did have a true love for stunts on TV. And get
this, a lot of stunt choreographers are trained in the martial arts. (I
didn’t have to connect the dots for you, you got it but that’s why I’m
My first big piece was an interview with Jeff Pruitt and Sophia Crawford – the stunt coordinator and Buffy stunt double from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Sorry if you thought Sarah Michelle Gellar did all her own stunts. Not
disrespecting, it’s just that a series can’t afford to put their stars
in harms way. One broken arm and 300 people are out of work for a month!
Having said that, Sarah did do a lot of fighting on the show and all of her moves came from Jeff.
I got to spend quite a few nights at the studio watching them film
and it was the thrill of my life — which I know I’ve mentioned more than
a few times here on this blog.
Anyway, I was cleaning out a closet and found all of my old Inside Kung-Fu magazines, so I thought I’d share screenshots of the articles. All of the super photos came straight from Jeff. The words are mine.
If you’re interested in a hardcopy of the magazine, there a few for sale on Amazon here: http://amzn.to/2GeTz6B – It’s the Sept 1998 issue with Jackie Chan on the cover.
