Dallas The Complete Second Season: A Bitter Sweet Season

Dallas-complete_second_season_DVDDallas returns for Season 3 on TNT this Monday, February 24. That means it’s time for the Dallas: The Complete Second Season to hit the shelves. Normally, I’d be very excited but truthfully this release is bitter sweet.

During the second season, we lost Larry Hagman. Larry was the evil yet totally delicious heart of the original series and of the reboot. Though he gave up a lot of his screentime to the new, young cast members, J.R. Ewing was always there. Characters did things because of J.R. They reacted because of J.R. – John Ross was John Ross because of J.R. And in that way, J.R. Ewing was able to live on even after Larry Hagman was gone.

Dealing with the death of an actor on a series is hard for everyone. While the cast and crew are grieving, the producers and writers have to decide how they’re going to handle it on screen. Will they recast? (Not an option in this case.) Will they write the character out? (Also not an option in this case.) Will they play out the reality on TV? (The only option in this case.)

And so, in episode 8, we all said goodbye to J.R. Ewing. Old cast members returned to pay tribute and it was as if we were all saying goodbye to Larry Hagman, too.

As they say, the show must go on. But can it go on without J.R.? They’re going to give it all they’ve got to make it so because that’s the absolute best way to honor the character everyone loved to hate and the man who brought him to life.

If you’re a fan of Larry Hagman’s, you’ll really appreciate the extras in this new box set. “Memories of Larry Hagman: A Cast and Crew Tribute” is an emotional collection of personal stories from the cast and crew. “One Last Conversation with Larry Hagman” is an unedited interview he gave when the new series premiered. There’s also an extended cut of “J.R.’s Masterpiece.”

Other features include “The Battle for Ewing Energies,” “Dallas Fashion Files” and a terrific highlight reel from Dallas at PaleyFest 2013.

Dallas-Fill-Er-UpIt’s impossible to talk about Dallas without talking about Larry Hagman and the lasting impact he’s had on the show. But that’s not the only reason you should pick up this DVD set. You should buy it because the Second Season of Dallas is full of devilish twists, classic guest stars, and nail-biting suspense. It’s fresh, it’s sexy, it’s scandalous – it’s Dallas. If you think you saw the whole second season, watch it again, because I’ll bet there’s something there you missed.

Dallas: Complete Second Season is available on Amazon.

Dallas: Season Three premieres Monday at 9 on TNT.
