First up is a famous UFO video from White Sands, New Mexico. In the video, which you see below, a saucer-shaped object speeds through the air, bounces off the ground then rises up only to crash completely.

The video was taken in 1996 and though many would like to believe it's an actual UFO, the more likely answer is that it's some kind of missile test from the White Sands military base. Tonight, the Fact or Faked team puts several theories to the test in an attempt to recreate the actual footage.

In one attempt, they use a model flying saucer on a set of guide-wires then force it to bounce using gravity and a spring release. It's quite an elaborate set up and it's unlikely that an amateur could have faked the footage that way. Still, it's fun to watch, because it's similar to the method used to create the Jupiter II landing in Irwin Allen's Lost in Space. FBI agent Ben Hansen, journalist Jael and tech-specialist Devin are like little kids when it comes to rockets and blowing things up, so they have a great time working out the origins of this video, even though they had to be roasting in the desert sun.

The second half of the episode is devoted to a ghostly apparition captured at the Tonopah Cemetery in Nevada. At the turn of the century, Tonopah was a prosperous mining town. They even had a luxury hotel with baths, steam heat and elevators. But in 1911, tragedy struck. A small fire broke out at the bottom of a mine shaft and 17 men were killed from either breathing the toxic fumes or falling to their deaths when they tried to escape. The victims were all buried in a lonely little cemetery which is said to be haunted by the spirit of man who died trying to rescue others.

The video in this case, is a moving figure caught on a full spectrum camera by a ghost hunting crew. The figure pops up from behind a tomb, moves a few yards then vanishes. At the same time, there is a growing glow at the far end of the frame, which corresponds with the site of a nearby highway.

Lead scientist Bill Murphy, joins stunt expert Austin Porter and photographer Lanisha Cole as they attempt to recreate the footage on a dark and spooky night. They start with the most likely scenario, that of another person walking around in the dark, then proceed to a hypothesis that requires a convoy of emergency vehicles with full-on lights and sirens.

Both cases are fascinating both from a historical and paranormal perspective but are the accompanying videos fact or fakes? Find out when you tune in to Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, tonight at 10:00 on Syfy.
Could be Heroes, could be X-Men, could be the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. But Syfy's new series Alphas is more like The Champions and since most of you have never seen that show, this will be new ground for you.

The series stars David Strathairn as Dr. Lee Rosen, a neurophysiologist / therapist / boss who oversees a group of crime solvers called "Alphas." Each member of the team has a special power that they've kept hidden from the world and no one in their everyday life knows what they really do with their time each day. What makes the series unique is that the powers aren't really "super." They're actually more like what you see on Fringe, mutated version of explainable abilities. No one flies, runs faster than a speeding bullet or lifts a bus with one hand.

Bill Harken's (Malik Yoba) skill comes from an over-active fight or flight reflex. When he gets stressed, this former FBI agent has the strength of ten men (but I don't think he can lift a bus.) The downside is that the bursts of energy take their toll on him physically and he has anger management problems which keep him from working effectively with the team.

The other man on the outs is Gary Bell (Ryan Cartwright of Bones). He is a high-functioning teenage autistic who sees electromagnetic frequencies. That means he can visualize radio, TV and cell signals. From his point of view, he's constantly sorting through the data that streams past his eyes. To the rest of the world, he's an anti-social misfit with finger ticks and no focus.

Nina Theroux (Laura Mennell) has the ability to make people think what she wants them to think as long as she can look them in the eyes. Rachel Pirzad (Azita Ghanizada) can heighten any one of her senses but only at the expense of another.

In the pilot episode, the group is tasked with solving a locked room murder. The victim: an informant in police custody. The killer: Cameron Hicks, a grocery clerk who just might be an Alpha. Warren Christie (Luther from the "Dead Man's Blood" episode of Supernatural and Greggy from Happy Town) plays Hicks. His skill is the ability to coordinate his mind and body to a point where he has perfect aim. So perfect, he can throw coins into a soda machine from across the room. The downside for Hicks is that he freezes under pressure, oh and he also can't remember assassinating anyone.

Alphas strays from the normal super hero formula mostly because there are no super villains. At least, not in the pilot. It's more like Bones with a Fringe twist than Smallville. The characters, even at their worst, are extremely likeable. Ryan Cartwright steals every scene he's in with his patience-sapping portrayal of autistic Bell and Christie is. . . well. . he's hunky, so there's that. For the male viewer, imagine sexy Nina making you do everything she wants simply by whispering the words.

Alphas is funny, endearing and action-packed. It's just the right thing to cap off a night of light, scifi fun which includes all new episodes of Eureka and Warehouse 13.

It all begins this Monday, July 11 on Syfy.

Speaking about his new movie Ferocious Planet, Stargate Atlantis star Joe Flanigan says, "to just get back into some camouflage and run around and shoot things. Call me crazy. I know it sounds a little weird, but I felt right at home!"

As a matter of fact, there are so many similarities between the Syfy series and the new original movie, at a quick glance, it can be hard to tell them apart. Just look at the photo of Flanigan on the run with his movie co-star -- looks like Atlantis to me!

In Ferocious Planet, Flanigan plays a disgraced Colonel who has been assigned to babysit a couple of scientists working in a bunker next door to the IRS. Enter John Rhys-Davies, a borish Senator who threatens to cut off the project's funding if Dr. O'Hara (Dagmar Döring) can't convince him that she's doing something worthwhile.

Against her better judgment, she fires up the machine which creates a window into parallel dimensions. Unfortunately, things go sideways and the entire bunker is thrown through a portal and into a land that is inhabited by creepy creatures that skitter around your feet and big mama monsters who don't take kindly to visitors.

From there, it's non-stop action as Flanigan and his two teammates do all they can to protect the civilians while the Doctor and her tech work on a way to get them back home.

Like all Syfy Original Movies, Ferocious Planet surges forward with tongue firmly planted in cheek. That's not to say that it's as wild as Mega Piranha or Sharktopus. The parallel dimension plot makes the creatures much more believable, kind of like an episode of Primeval.

Flanigan plays the whole thing like a war-weary commando whose quick with a quip and more annoyed than fearful of being killed. Flanigan says his calm demeanor was less of a directorial choice and more about the fact that he was mislead in regard to the size of the monsters.

"I didn't think they'd be that big," he told reporters on a recent conference call. "When we shot this, we shot it Ireland, and we worked strictly on green screen, and we weren’t given much in the way of what it was going to look like. And that’s kind of interesting because on [Stargate Atlantis], we always knew what the Wraith were going to look like. And so, you had an idea of what you were looking at and what you were working with. [With Ferocious Planet], we weren’t entirely clear what these things were going to look like until after we shot it, so I was just hoping that our levels of appropriate fear were there."

Since Flanigan plays the stalwart leader of the group, charged with keeping even the most reckless among them safe, it's okay that he doesn't freak out at the sight of a horned monster with two sets of three eyes and jaws that can snap a man in two with one bite. He doesn't freak, but he does want to get back home while a few of the other characters think they should stay and be the first human beings to investigate this new world. I asked Joe if he would stay or would he go?

"I think it depends on what you left behind. I mean, you got a wife and kids left behind; you might want to run and go back. I think if you don’t, then I think it could be a nice permanent vacation. In our case, it’s unclear - in the movie, it was kind of funny because all I really have to go back to is a boat. And really - you know in retrospect, that’s really not a hell of a lot of to go back to. Maybe I should’ve stayed. It might’ve been the lack of cold beer or something that [made me want to] run.

It does appear to be in Flanigan's nature to find the swiftest, easiest route out of a tricky situation.

"Our stunt guy on Atlantis (James Bamford) always had in his mind that I was some karate expert of some sort and would have these enormously like elaborate you know choreographed fights going on. And, I would say, “You know, I’m not that guy. I’m Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones. I just pick my gun up and shoot the guy.” I mean the path of least resistance. And it would frustrate him. However, we were able to make it up with my character getting kind of beat to crap and getting thrown around. And I think it worked well for that character. And in this case, it’s not unsimilar. [In] Ferocious Planet, the guy gets kind of whacked around a good bit."

And from the sound of it, Flanigan gets 'whacked around a good bit" in real life, too.

"I sit here talking to you with a fully separated AC joint - third degree AC separation, a semi-chopped off finger, and it’s all from just nonsensical stuff like mountain biking. And, I’m actually sitting at the base of Aspen Mountain as we speak trying to figure out if I’m going to go cross-country skiing, snowboarding, or just down-hilling. I live for it. And that’s why I think I like action/adventures, because I just need to physicalize things, and it’s tough for me to be inside doing domestic-like acting."

Ferocious Planet is definitely not "domestic." It's an entertaining ride with a neat little payoff at the end.

Finally, Joe Flanigan had some words for the Stargate Atlantis fans.

"As you know, the franchise has been summarily closed. That doesn’t mean that’s the end of the franchise by any stretch of the imagination, especially if I have my druthers, I’ll find a way to bring it back. I think the fans deserve to see some closure or at least some type of continuation. I think that - and especially in regards to my show, it was just unceremoniously closed and we need to do something about it."

To that, I say, "hear, hear!"

Watch the Syfy Saturday Original Movie Ferocious Planet, this Saturday, April 9, at 9:00 pm Easter/Pacific time, 8:00 pm Central.

In season two of Top Chef he got his head forcibly shaved by his drunken fellow contestants and this year he was unfairly (says Marcel) ejected from Top Chef All Stars. Now, he’s putting all of that behind him as he embarks on a new series that he says will show the world the real Marcel.

Ready or not, here comes, Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen and you won’t find it on Bravo, TLC or even the Food Network. This cooking show is a Syfy original and it marks another step in their quest to become less about scifi and more about creativity and imagination.

From the description, Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen sounds like a culinary Mythbusters, combining food and science to create wild dishes such as watermelon cubes that taste and look like tuna and Tiger’s Breath, a frozen confection that produces a wisp of white smoke when you eat it. Unfortunately, preparing the molecular treats takes a back seat to the reality side of the show that has Marcel working as a party caterer. And yes, this really is a new show on Syfy.

Each week Marcel and his team, mixologist and chef Devon Espinosa, cook, jack-of-all-trades and artist Jarrid Masse, and assistant cook and caterer Robyn Wilson are tasked with creating and executing a menu that combines their talents with a specific theme. In the first episode, which airs Tuesday, March 22 at 10:00, it’s a “Walk on the Wild Side” as they cater a small fundraiser, cocktail party for the Wildlife Waystation. In the second episode, they must cater a romantic dinner party at a location that is far, far away from a working kitchen.

As with all reality shows of this kind, the episode goes from, “how can we ever do this in time!” to humorous brainstorming, to the inevitable slipup (We burned the fruit leather! Now we don’t have a sample for the client who is due here in ten minutes!) to the final execution. There are plenty of squabbles, like when Marcel was “forced” to use his white plates at the last minute after the party planner told him do that and die and there are plenty of oohs and ahs over food that doesn’t look so good on screen. Wildlife theme or not, do people really enjoy eating beef that has been shaped to look like a felled tree? They’re raising money for a facility that protects animals, but one of the dishes is an edible egg in a bird’s nest. Oh yes, that’s showing concern for our animal friends. Let’s eat their young! The spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp was very sweet, but making a couple slurp a single noodle out of a martini glass while their guests look on? Just gross.

Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen is entertaining in the same way as Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but is that really where Syfy wants to go with their new line-up? If the show would spend more time on the actual mechanics of molecular gastronomy it would be far more interesting, like a culinary Mr. Wizard. Now that's a show I'd tune in every week to see.

If you're a die hard fan of Supernatural, you'll understand the long list of in jokes that fly through this week's all new episode "The French Mistake." If you're more of a casual viewer, you'll probably feel as confused as Sam and Dean are when they jump through a window and land in an alternate universe.

Look alive, mateys, there be spoilers ahead.

When Raphael sends a formidable hitman after all who have helped Castiel in his quest, Balthazar goes on the offense by sending Sam and Dean into an alternate universe in order to protect them and the key to whole holy war. Once on the other side, the brothers find that they are actually actors on a TV show and that's where things really get weird.

In the other universe, quite a few things are as they should be. Robert Singer is directing, Serge Ladouceur is at his side and Lou Bollo is there coordinating the stunts. (Bollo is one of the few real crew members to play himself in the episode and I must say some of the other casting choices were dead on.) Needless to say, our boys are very confused when they realize their world is now made up of plywood flats and rubber props, so they're exceptionally glad to see their old friend Castiel. One problem, Castiel is a wimpy, diva named Misha who likes to Twitter incessantly including the use of the fan-coined term, J2. For the rest of the episode, the boys work on finding their way home while the crew worries about their obvious psychotic break. And then there's Genevieve who apparently has no love for Jensen, but no worries because according to the trappings of his trailer, Jensen has plenty of love for himself.

The biggest problem with "The French Mistake" is that the writers decided to mix the truth with overblown exaggerations that I hope to heaven aren't even close to the truth. In the reality column we have the boys watching a clip of Jensen from Days of Our Lives but then we have Jared and Gen living in Stately Wayne Manor with giant paintings of themselves on every wall. (Please tell me that's not true.) When it's suggested to Bob Singer that they'll have to cut the scene where the boys sit on the hood of the Impala and share their feelings for each other, Singer grumbles about the landslide of hate mail he'll receive from the fans. Then there's that crack about how few people even watch the show. We've seen Supernatural indulge in both self-deprecating humor and swipes at the fans, but it's simply not novel or funny, anymore.

The saving grace of the episode is Sebastian Roche as Balthazar who neatly fills the humorlessly sarcastic hole left by the late great Crowley (Mark Sheppard). I didn't warm to him in his previous episodes, but this time around he has some of the best lines like when he refers to our boys as the stick in a deadly game of go fetch. Being an American, I also got a chuckle out of the boys reaction to finding out they're in Vancouver, though I take exception to Dean's complaint about too much hockey talk. Ice hockey is the only truly watchable sport on TV, so hush, you.

The writers did hit the mark with being out of "soul phone range," and the reference to the "attractive, crying man" is so funny in a moment that shouldn't be. Mother Nature also gets credit on this one as the weather really slams them good in a few scenes. Wow, I was shivering just watching them.

Supernatural has a history of making ideas that shouldn't work, work. "Monster Movie" is still one of my favorite episodes and "Changing Channels" is brilliant in spots. Sadly, I can't say the same for "The French Mistake" which has many of the same problems as "The Real Ghostbusters." What bothers me most of all about this episode is that it makes Sam and Dean look like fools and that's never fun. It also doesn't pack the emotional punch that we often get at the end of the most comedic episodes.

"Well, at least they're talking to each other." In the episode, that is a running joke aimed at Jared and Jensen and as a fan, it's one of the elements that I dearly hope is part of the fantasy and not the reality of life on the set of Supernatural.

Dragons. When I heard this word associated with Supernatural, I was worried. But now that I got to preview this Friday’s all new episode, I can tell you it’s all going to work out fine. Well, as fine as things ever work out for the Winchester Brothers. “Like a Virgin” is emotional, funny, and action-packed. Best of all it’s full of old school boys' banter (“Being easy is all upside.”) with so many pop culture references it’s like a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit.

Adam Glass gets points for his well-balanced script and director Phil Scriggia keeps it moving with some unusual camera angles and fabulous crane shots. (Hey, there’s a dragon, remember?) Make note to pay special attention to the Impala driving scene. There’s something soft and compelling about the way he shot this one. Shots of the boys from the backseat and though I couldn’t place the song that plays under it, it’s a fabulous tune that took me back to earlier seasons.

There are several excellent music cues in this episode, including a piece that could have come right out of any magical, Medieval movie. There’s also a nearly two-minute musical montage at the start which is a testament to someone’s editing skills. Still not the overwhelming impact of the “Carry on My Wayward Son” montage, but it’s certainly up there.

If you’ve seen the promos for the episode, you know that Sam is back on his feet in time to help slay the virgin-stealing dragon. Jared Padalecki turns in a subtly nuanced performance that is a nice change from the Robo-Sam we’ve been seeing all season. Jensen Ackles gets to do the two things he does best, comedy and emotional drama. Okay, those are two very big ideas, but if you’re a regular viewer, you know the kind of stuff I mean. Jim Beaver and Misha Collins both get in a pivotal scene or two and we’re also introduced to something bad. . . very bad.

I’d really like to give a shout out to Kim Johnston Ulrich. (Thanks to TVOvermind for the name.) She plays the professor who is an expert on all things dragon and she has a history with one of the characters in the show. I know Supernatural often has trouble making recurring females work, but I like this one, a lot and I’d be happy to see them use her again. We’ll talk more about that and my slightly unhappy response to Dean’s “worthiness test” after everyone’s had a chance to see the episode.

As mid-season premieres go, “Like a Virgin” packs a wallop. Questions are answered and new ones are asked, evil plans are set into motion and the boys. . . well, they’ve still got issues but it feels so much more like the Supernatural I fell in love with. Plus, forty minutes of Dean Winchester’s running commentary on virginity, seriously, you don’t want to miss that.

Supernatural returns Friday, February 4 at 9:00 on The CW.

I am the audience for Syfy’s new competition series Face-Off and you should be watching, too.

Each week, special effects and make-up artists compete in challenges designed to test their creativity, technique and artistic skills. They have a world-class studio full of tools but it’s imagination and time management that will make or break them.

In the first episode, which airs Wednesday, January 26 at 10:00, the contestants are thrown into their first challenge in the middle of their welcome reception. The task? Wow the judges with your best work that includes everyday items found in the room.

The judges are led by a man whose work, I’m particularly familiar with, Glenn Hetrick, owner of Optic Nerve Studios, Inc., the people behind the make-up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and hundreds of other movies and TV shows.

Next is Academy-award winner Ve Neill known for transforming Johnny Depp into Edward Scissorhands, Robin Williams into a Scottish nanny for Mrs. Doubtfire, and Martin Landau into horror legend Bela Lugosi for Ed Wood.

The final judge is Patrick Tatopoulos, creator of creature effects on such films as I Am Legend, Underworld, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Independence Day, just to name a few.

As if that wasn’t enough to rattle the contestants, the host of the series is McKenzie Westmore. The Westmores have been synonymous with movie make-up since they 1917. Westmores made Dr. Jekyll turn into Mr. Hyde and they brought the Creature out of the Black Lagoon. McKenzie’s father, Michael, was the artist behind Star Trek’s many monsters. Unlike most of her family members before her, McKenzie chose to work in front of the cameras making her the perfect host for Face-Off.

After testing their skills in a wide open challenge, the contestants are given three days to create an animal-human hybrid based on either an elephant, beetle or ostrich. To make things more difficult, they’re tasked to work in teams which leads to creative conflicts and power struggles, several of which show up blatantly in the work.

In the end, the majority of the teams turn out something truly amazing. The winners took top honors with a piece that moved with the actor, allowing the performance to come through and add to the effect rather than fight against it. On the downside, a couple of laughable attempts that looked like store-bought Halloween costumes.

If you love monster movies or just have a flair for the artistic, tune in to Face-Off. The competition starts January 26 on Syfy

Luckily the wait is over and now that the new season has begun, we're headed off in some new and very interesting directions.

The biggest reveals revolved around the show's newest character, nerd-genius Dr. Miller (Reaper's Bret Harrison). Miller has been studying an alien skeleton that was discovered in an archeological dig. The skeleton was loaded with an alien version of phosphorus which, Ryan says is needed for alien reproduction. (Uh oh!) Then it turns out that the red rain which covered the earth at the start of the episode was loaded with phosphorus which makes it look like the V's have turned earth into one, giant, fertility clinic. But wait, there's more! Erica had very high levels of phosphorus in her bloodstream when she was pregnant with Tyler! Could he be half V? Of course! Remember back in the first season, Tyler found out that his dad left them because he thought Tyler wasn't his child. Remember, Tyler had an accident and his blood type didn't match his dad's, so dad assumed Tyler was someone else's son. . . and no this isn't Days of Our Lives. Yes, it's kind of a soapy plot, but I'd forgotten all about it until Erica brought up the blood test and wham. . . so cool. No wonder Tyler is so precious to Anna.

And speaking of Anna, we got a whole new look at the usual calm and cool commander of the V's, didn't we? After suffering the loss of her soldier children, Anna decided to make an example of a ship commander who questioned her loyalties. Bad move, buddy. He ended up having his skin flayed off by Anna's razor sharp tail and then, alas, a total eclipse of his heart. Is it wrong to say Anna's hot when she's angry?

The best bit of the season premiere was the tie-in to the original V series with Jane Badler appearing as Diana, Anna's mother. It makes me wonder if the skeleton in Dr. Miller's closet isn't a throwback to the original series as well. Could it be that the V's actually invaded back in the 80's, but used some kind of mind control to make us all forget? We know that there have been V's on the Earth for awhile, but by bringing back Diana's character and not just the actress who played her makes it feel like more than just a fannish nod, don't you think? Rumor has it that Marc Singer, who starred in the original series, will also guest this series, but not as Mike Donovan. See, now, they're just trying to confuse me.

One thing I'm not confused about is the fact that you can buy V the first season on DVD when you click this link. You can also re-watch the season premiere at ABC.com's V Page. V returns with a new episode tonight, January 11 at 9:00 on ABC. Don't miss it, what you learn there will be vital to your own survival when the V's coming a calling.

Would you be excited? Afraid? A little of both? Would you grab your camera and film it for YouTube or grab your family and get out of town? Face it, as much as we're a nation fascinated by the idea of aliens, we probably wouldn't react well if they showed up en masse. But what if, as was the case with the Visitors of "V," they claimed to not only come in peace, but they offered us the technology to cure cancer and extend our lives. Maybe then we wouldn't be so quick to join the resistance movement?

Personally, I think any alien civilization that goes through the trouble to set up camp here on Earth is up to no good. The cynic in me simply doesn't believe in a whole race of people who do good for goodness sake. If they're here and offering to help us, they want something. Our water. Our oil. Our children! Remember "To Serve Man?"

It could be that I've spent too many years watching old sci fi movies like War of the Worlds and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Battlestar Galactica is the first show I can think of where the aliens really did come in peace, and after that Alien Nation. Alien Nation is the best example of what would happen if the aliens were on a level playing ground and we were forced to assimilate them into our culture. But the Visitors of "V?" They've got the upper hand. They have Anna and despite years of being told 'you can't tell a book by its cover,' almost everyone believes that her pretty face and sweet smile means she's a nice person. But not Erica and not Father Jack or any of the others who have banned together to stop the V's. That's where I'd be if the aliens came. Sending out email warning messages and finding ways to peel away their friendly masks. No, Anna and her people didn't come to Earth to earn their alien merit badges. They have something big planned and it's going to take everything we've got to defeat them in the end.

The V's may have taken a short break, but they'll be back very soon. In the mean time, refresh your memory with V: The Complete First Season on DVD. Visit http://bit.ly/e6ABTG to pick up your set in time for the holidays and the Season 2 Premiere!" And hurry because you only have until January 4 at 9:00 before the Visitors return to ABC.

Need more Erica, Father Jack and Tyler right now, visit the V page at ABC.com.

It may be Christmas time in the city but for the Leverage crew it's a time to leave town for separate vacations. Their plans change, however, when Santa asks them to help save his reputation. Not even Scrooge Ford (Timothy Hutton) can say no to Santa, not while Parker is there believing in the holiday magic. Turns out Santa got fired from his job at the mall when the mall manager (Dave Foley) found a liquor bottle in his locker. But the charges were trumped up and upon investigation the team finds out that all of the regular Santas have been replaced with men of questionable morals. No one knows what the men have planned but they do know it's not a turkey dinner for the homeless. These Grinches are planning on stealing Christmas and it's up to Nate and his crew to stop them.

The Ho Ho Ho Job is a joyously funny episode that has Eliot (Christian Kane) undercover as a disgruntled Santa while Parker frolics gleefully as his trusty sidekick elf. Beth Riesgraf steals much of the episode with her childlike wonder and insistence on having a magical Christmas. In traditional Leverage style, there are plenty of twists and turnabouts in this one including a surprise visit from an old "friend."

Oh by gosh, by golly, it's time for Hardison (Aldis Hodge) hacks and holly. Sophie's (Gina Bellman) grifting while snow flakes are drifting and Nate works on plan B and C. It's Leverage: The Ho Ho Ho Job and it airs on Dec 12. December 19th TNT will present the two-hour season finale. It's definitely the most action-packed gift you'll get this Christmas season.
