One of the best things about TV on DVD is that you can catch up on TV shows that you missed the first time around. That’s why I was so excited to receive The Originals: The Complete First Season for review.
The Originals is one of those shows I always meant to watch but never did because I didn’t have the time slot open on my DVR. Now, I not only get to catch up, but I can catch up at my own pace – which usually means binge watching four episodes in a sitting.
For those of you coming late to the party, The Originals is a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. The villains from that show are now the heroes on their on show. That’s not to say that they’ve given up their evil ways, it’s just that their priorities have changed. That means that sacrifices must made, alliances forged, sins forgiven and. . . along the way, all new sins will be committed.
What I like best about The Originals, is that it’s a grown-up version of The Vampire Diaries. Meaning, it’s everything I loved about TVD without all the things I hated – namely the whole high school horror story. TVD has its merits but I still can’t understand why vampires have to go to school.
The Originals is smart, dark and sexy and it looks amazing. From the costumed flashbacks to the modern-day New Orleans, The Originals has a cinematic quality that pulls you in. That quality is why you need the Blu-ray version of this first season release.
Now let’s talk special features:
“The Originals: Origins” – this featurette is all about how the series came to be. You might think a TVD spin-off was a no-brainer but not everyone was sure it would work. Creator Julie Plec takes us through the process from idea to pilot, to a major shift that nearly derailed the production when they got the pick up.
“The Originals: Re-mixing History” talks about how they mixed fact and fiction to give the characters roots in old New Orleans.
“The Original Vampires: A Bite-sized Backstory” will catch you up on any history you might have missed.
The set also includes deleted scenes and commentary on the pilot by creator Julie Plec and director Chris Grismer. No bloopers – sorry – but you get something even better – the 2013 Comic-Con Panel and the 2014 PaleyFest Panel.
I love that studios are now including these events on the DVD releases so everyone can enjoy them.
