Supernatural: Hammer of the Gods A Closer Look

In the Supernatural episode, Hammer of the Gods (5.19), Sam and Dean Winchester are lured to an old hotel where they meet up with a variety of Gods from around the planet. Let’s take a closer look:

We begin with The Elysian Fields Hotel

In Greek mythology, The Elysian Fields were the final resting places of the heroic, but it’s also a ballpark in NJ where the first organized baseball game was said to have taken place. Check out the great styling on the lettering.

The interior is terrific, another great hotel / motel set, thanks to Jerry Wanek and crew. I love the Astro Lounge logo in the back and the way everything glows.

Dean’s excited to see that the hotel has the latest Casa Erotica film On Demand. Casa Erotica is a running joke in the show dating back to Season Two and “Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things.”

Here’s Adam Croasdell as Baldur and Rekha Sharma as Kali. Don’t they make a handsome couple? I thought they were both perfect and Kali’s speech about how us Westerners think we rule the school was dead on.

Can we take a moment to talk about the elephant in the room?

ganesh

Just love the lighting on this one.

Alas poor Gabriel, we knew you well. One more angel (love the wings) bites the dust and what a waste, Richard Speight Jr. was a great asset to the show.

Hammer of the Gods was directed by Rick Bota. It was his very first Supernatural episode. He also directed an episode of the Vampire Diaries but up until recently he was the cinematographer on Raising the Bar and Cane before that. Cinematographers make great directors and I love the way he handled this episode. It’s not easy to direct a bottle show (where all the action takes place in one location), especially one with so many characters but he kept it clean, interesting and the whole thing had a richness to it that made it feel like a classic thriller. I hope he’s back next year.
